India Post is a government-operated postal service in India that was established before the independence of India and founded on 1st April 1854 and as of 31st March 2015, the Indian postal service had 154939 post offices in India.

On 15th August 1972, a six-digit code of post office numbering Postal Index number (PIN) was introduced.
